Guido Van Rossum was born on 31 January 1956. He was born in the Netherlands, where he received a master's degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Amsterdam in 1982. He has worked for multiple research institutes around the world, including the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Corporation for National Research Initiatives. In May 2000, he left CNRI to work for tech startup BeOpen.com, which collapsed in the same year. From late 2000 until 2003 he worked for Zope Corporation. In 2003 Van Rossum left Zope for Elemental Security. While there he worked on a new programming language for the organization. From 2005 to December 2012, he worked at Google, where he spent half of his time developing the Python language. In October 2019, Van Rossum officially retired before coming out of retirement the following year to join Microsoft. He currently holds the title of Distinguished Engineer at Microsoft.
